Year 5 – 11+ Preparation
Year 5 is a the main year in which the objectives of the lessons will almost entirely be reasoning and problem solving as opposed to National Curriculum subjects. This is the year in which the children will gain the courage and the confidence to participate in the 11+ Exams.
English and Maths will be enhanced according to the National Curriculum Syllabus; Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning will be the main focus and will be developed from Year 4 in accordance with the new CEM style 11+ examinations.
The sessions will be held in small groups with about 15 students. Every Saturday there will be a three hour session including breaks. Average teaching time will be two hours and fifteen minutes which includes a test session on the topics covered the previous week. The tests will be marked by the end of the session. Your children will develop advanced vocabulary work and creative writing skills during the larger group sessions to encourage discussion, while learning from peers. This allows your son/daughter to develop their writing skills to a high level within a supportive and fun environment. Timing and technique sessions are held in a larger group to provide an exam atmosphere and to enable your child to learn to focus under timed conditions.
Pupils will be required to do homework which will be marked by the parents and the results should be reported back to us. The focus will be on Verbal and Non Verbal Reasoning as opposed to Maths and English.
Feedback will be given at the end of every session, every week based on the tests. Regular progress reports will also be provided, giving a detailed description of your child’s weaknesses and strengths, including individual targets. This information will also be based the results of the homework reported back to us. The mock tests will also be taken into account. Additional support will be given if required.
All the class books, mock exam papers, assessments, parents’ evenings, resources are included within the course fees.
